Hij weigerde militaire dienst op grond van zijn pacifistische overtuiging. Later tijdens de oorlog kreeg hij twijfels. Circa begin 1944 melde hij zich als vrijwilliger bij de YMCA en na een training ging hij met een YMCA bus naar het front om taken te vervullen zoals het serveren van thee aan de troepen. Hij volgde voornamelijk de 53rd Welsh Division. </p>
